Having your brakes fail can be absolutely horrifying, and while we here at Southtowne Hyundai hope it never happens to you, it’s always good to be prepared. A failed braking system doesn’t always mean a car accident. There are things you can do to greatly improve your chances of making it to a stop without injury or accident. Here are some tips for you if your brakes fail.
- Remain Calm This alone can make the difference between an accident and making it out of traffic safely. By remaining calm, you’re keeping a clear head that leaves you able to react both faster and better to the situation. Panicking will bring jerky movements and will likely lead to a crash.
- Try the Brakes Apply consistent pressure to the brakes to try and stop the car. Modern cars have a dual braking system, so the rear and front brakes act independently of each other. While it’s much easier to stop with both brakes, one will do the job, just not as quickly.
- Turn On Your Emergency Lights Another reason to remain calm, remembering to turn on your emergency lights will let other drivers know something’s wrong. As a result, they may give you more room to maneuver towards the side of the road.
