Tesla has become a major player in the electric car segment, but now Hyundai is offering premium competition. The South Korean automaker revealed plans to bring an electric SUV to the market in 2018. The new Hyundai electric SUV will kick off plans to release a full range of electric vehicles.
It’s no secret that Tesla holds almost all the cards and generally dominates the competition when it comes to electric vehicles. Few competitors have been able to hold a candle to the lineup. Hyundai is looking to change that by rolling out new electric vehicles on an entirely new platform.
Other automakers have fallen short when it comes to long-range electric offerings. That’s why the new Hyundai electric SUV will boast an impressive 186-mile range. That will set the standard for the entire line of electric vehicles planned in coming years.
Hyundai’s new electric SUV won’t face Tesla alone. It will be joined by a sibling with Kia badging released around the same time. The Genesis luxury brand will see a plug-in hybrid SUV in 2019 and an electric luxury car in 2021.
“The electric-vehicle platform will require high up-front investments, but we are doing this to prepare for the future,” said Lee Ki-sang, head of Hyundai-Kia green car operations.
