New Autonomous Hyundai IONIQ Concept Debuts at Automobility Los Angeles

New Autonomous Hyundai IONIQ Concept

The innovative Hyundai IONIQ is now even more ground-breaking. During a press conference at the Automobility LA, which took place during the LA Auto Show, Hyundai introduced a new autonomous Hyundai IONIQ concept car that stands out significantly from other self-driving vehicles.

This new model is one of the few autonomous cars that has a hidden LiDAR system on its front bumper, rather than its roof. Typically, vehicles with self-driving technology will have a large, obtrusive radar system on its roof, making them appear more like a science project than an advanced vehicle. The IONIQ concept instead looks like a regular, everyday car, keeping the lineup’s suave silhouette and attractive exterior.

Hyundai’s hidden LiDAR system means the Autonomous IONIQ can detect the absolute position of surrounding vehicles and objects. This system also has three cameras that can detect pedestrians, lane markings, and traffic signals; Forward Facing Radar to aid in route planning; and a Blind Spot Detection system that makes simple lane changes safer. It even has a GPS antenna that determines the vehicle’s precise location at any given time. Three versions of this model is now in testing, along with two Autonomous Tucson Fuel Cell vehicles.

Currently, the production IONIQ offers a number of driver assistance technologies that make it as close to autonomous as possible. These technologies include Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Smart Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, and Rear Cross-Traffic Assist.
