What to Do After a Car Accident

The first few moments after a car accident can be incredibly stressful, especially for those who haven’t been driving for very long. Panic and fear can make it hard to remember what to do, and that could hurt you when making an insurance claim. Here are a few tips regarding what to do after a car accident because we at SouthTowne Hyundai are here to help.

Breathe

The first thing to do immediately following an accident is to breathe and try to relax. Panicking will ultimately result in mistakes and a foggy memory. Take a moment to clear your mind before exiting the vehicle. Your wallet, insurance company, and future self will thank you.

Check for Injuries

The next step after remaining calm is to check for injuries. Make sure you don’t have any serious wounds or pain. Once you’ve checked over yourself, attend to any passengers to make sure they’re okay as well. Finally, check on anyone else involving, including the other driver and any bystanders.

Gather Information

While you should always call the police, even for minor accidents, it’s equally important to gather the other driver’s information as well. Make sure to get their name, insurance company (or agent), and a copy of the police report. Having that information ready to go will expedite the claims process.

Wash Lights

Start on the outside by scrubbing those headlights and taillights. They can get foggy and dirty during the winter, so scrubbing them will help your visibility.

Clean Out the Trunk

A lot of things can get haphazardly thrown in the trunk. Take the time to finally donate that bag of clothes or move the ice scraper to the basement.

Wax the Outside

Get a bright and shiny look going into spring by washing and waxing the exterior of your car. Waxing doesn’t just make your car look nice; it also helps seal your paint, protecting it from water spots and wear and tear.

Vacuum

Take that vacuum to the inside of your car. Don’t miss a spot – get under the mats, all the nooks and crannies, and all over the seats.

Clean Underneath

The bottom of your car can get pretty mucky, especially with mud or rain that can come with winter. Take a hose to the underneath or your car to give it a good washing.
